Key Indicators O ff-premise sales of domestic wines rose 7% in August compared to August 2014, and rose 6% for the most recent 52-week period, according to IRI, the Chicago, Ill.-based market-research firm. Volume was up 3% for all domestic wines sold off-premise, compared to August 2014. The figures include both table wine and sparkling wine in IRI's multi-outlet and conve- nience store report through Aug. 9. The dollar value of sparkling wine sold in August was 12% higher than August 2014. Volume of sparkling wine rose by 7%. A closer look at Cabernet Sauvignon sales A ugust hiring activity—mostly in winery hospitality jobs and winery sales and marketing jobs—drove the Winery Job Index 20% higher than August 2014, according to Winejobs.com. The activity came after a relative lull in July and helped keep the 12- month Winery Job Index at 19%. Sales and marketing job activity in August rose by 71% from August 2014, when this sub- index had its low point for that year. The August 2015 index showed the largest increase for that month in this job category since at least 2008. The sub-index for direct-to-consumer, tast- ing room and retail positions grew 14% in August from a year ago. Hiring activity for winemakers and other production personnel rose 7% in August com- pared to August 2014. Wineries typically want their winemaking teams complete before har- vest begins in late August, but this year it ap- peared they continued recruiting until grapes started rolling onto many crush pads.
