March 2015 Wines&Vines 57 wine east wine industry news s yracuse, N.Y.–After three years in Lancaster, Pa., the Eastern Winery Exposition (EWE) will take place March 17-19 at the Oncenter Convention Center in Syracuse. Designed to provide relevant grapegrowing and wine- making information to eastern U.S. and Canadian wineries and vine- yards, EWE offers a wide-ranging conference program, networking events and the largest winery and vineyard trade show in the eastern United States. According to Bob Mignarri, EWE's organizer, the 2015 confer- ence will feature expanded work- shops and standalone workshop modules. The three-day confer- ence will begin March 17 with two daylong workshops—one that will appeal to those just starting to grow grapes and make wine, and a second designed to address is- sues facing those who are expand- ing their vineyard and/or winery from a small to mid-size or mid- size to large. Each workshop will contain five modules and feature multiple speakers. The workshops are longer than in previous years by three hours, and registration is more flexible. Attendees may pur- chase day passes, workshop-plus- conference passes or single-session passes for specific modules. Sessions on March 18 and 19 will focus on four areas: viticul- ture, enology, cold-climate grapes and business (marketing, money and management). Cornell Uni- versity researchers will present recent research findings in viticul- ture and enology, and other speak- ers will cover a range of topics from Austrian reds for cool cli- mates and yeast tools to updates on the red blotch virus and achiev- ing economically sustainable vine- yards. Money, management and marketing talks will look at web- site design, tasting room problems and the Wine Market Council's annual U.S. Consumer Report. For the first time, the Northern Grapes Symposium will take place as part of the conference schedule on March 18. Tim Martinson, Cor- nell senior extension associate and project director of the Northern Grapes Project, told Wines & Vines that the project partnered with EWE to give growers and wine- makers throughout the east in- creased access to information on the northern varietals. Tasting ses- sions of commercial wines made from cold-climate varietals in Ne- braska and New York will be in- cluded as part of this symposium. This year's trade show has more than 200 exhibitors signed up—27 more than in 2014—and it will be the largest wine trade show ever held in New York state. Conse- quently, the trade show is an excel- lent place for people in the industry to meet face to face with many different suppliers and to evaluate the most current products and equipment. Mignarri anticipates that the 2015 trade show floor will be sold out well before EWE opens. Several events during the confer- ence will provide opportunities for networking and socializing.
