W hen Jim's Supply C o m p a n y ( J S C ) opened in 1959 in Bakersfield, Califor- nia, it began as a structural steel and pipe supplier. In 1981, JSC's business expanded to include full on-site production of metal trellis- ing materials. Since then, JSC has become one of the largest trellis- ing and crop manipulation manu- facturers in North America. JSC manufactures and stocks custom vineyard, orchard and fruit trellising supplies. Their line of products includes bird netting, rain film, rain film netting, fencing, grape stakes, vineyard t-posts, vineyard t-post accessories, end posts, training stakes, wood stakes, crossarms, wire, and wire accessories. In addition, they carry shade cloth, grow tubes, and vine protection, as well as struc- tural steel and siding for sheds and other outdoor structures needed in the fields. As a fully integrated manufac- turer, the company has the flexibil- ity to sell direct to customers and to partner with quality full service resale accounts in other areas of the USA. JSC has the stock capac- ity to supply vineyard managers with standard items immediately, whether the need is for compo- nents or complete systems. As a distributor, JSC is proud to support the following companies: Gripple, Ocloc™, Tenax, Plantra™, CMC , Nucor, Davis Wire™, South- western Wire™, W. Silver, Poly- sak™, GreenTech, Bekaert Wire™, and Tree Island, among many oth- ers. With locations in Central and Northern California, JSC can de- liver anywhere within the state, and ships to customers both do- mestically and abroad. "No customer is too small or too large," says Dan Drake, Vice President of JSC. "We strive to fill orders from one clip to millions of stakes." Drake says JSC also thrives on working with custom requests and new prototypes, always striv- ing to be on the forefront of prod- uct improvements for the industry. He recalls when Richard Smart, the renowned viticulturist, first brought the vertical trellising tech- nique to Nor th American vine- yards. JSC helped pioneer the rolled-edge trellis posts that are still the standard today. These rolled-edge posts helped save the rods and rail systems on mechan- ical pickers from the damage that flat-edged posts were causing. One of JSC's most unique proj- ects, requested by Karl Giguiere of RH Phillips, was a folding verti- cal trellis system that was built for a commercial size vineyard. "We get unusual and cutting- edge customer requests every year," Drake claims. "I've seen homemade designs written on nap- kins and notebook paper, and more exact and complex designs from professional engineers. Each one becomes a part of our learning curve as manufacturers, and gives us the opportunity to continuously improve our operation."
