Located in a recently renovated century- old barn in northeastern Ohio, Windows on Pairings includes a tasting and sales room with a selection of wines from across Ohio, a special events area, a hands-on kitchen for culinary classes, a demonstration vine- yard and an educational area for consum- ers, winemakers and vineyard staff. According to Donniella Winchell, executive director of the Ohio Wine Producers Associa- tion, the goals of Windows on Pairings in- clude training skilled winemakers and grape- growers as well as developing more local jobs and increasing tourism for the region. Winchell told Wine East that an eight-row demonstration vineyard has been planted featuring popular varieties in the region. Jodi Creasap Gee, program director for the associate's degree in enology and viticulture at Kent State University-Ashtabula, said she was looking forward to working with Windows on Pairings to plan workshops that would provide educational programming. "We see the Windows on Pairings as a great opportunity for our students. They can work or volunteer there and get a broader experience with the wine industry," she said. Sessions focusing on professional develop- ment are already on the schedule. "We plan to bring in someone from TTB, a person from the Ohio Division of Liquor Control, a profes- sional winemaker and a professional grape- grower, university researchers, insurance ex- perts, a marketing person and an experienced entrepreneur," Winchell said. "We want fami- lies to come and talk with these experts, even briefly, so they can go into the wine business with their eyes wide open." Funding of $15 million for the center (and $800,000 for Windows on Pairings) came from state dollars and donations. —Linda Jones McKee
