22 W i n e s & V i n e s J U LY 2 0 1 4 J U L Y N E W S VWE acquires Canopy Management Wine Vintage Wine Estates in Santa Rosa announced its acquisition of Napa- based Canopy Manage- ment Wine Co. and its portfolio of brands, which include Middle Sister, PromisQous, Purple Cowboy, Wine Sisterhood, Deep Pur- ple, Girl & Dragon and Lady La Femme. The deal follows Vintage Wine Estates' purchase of Clos Pegase Winery in Napa Valley as well as Viansa Winery located near the city of So- noma in 2013. Terry Wheatley and Brian Wurtz founded Canopy in 2008. Wheatly will join Vintage Wine Estates as executive vice president of sales and marketing, and Wurtz will oversee the transition of wine supply, dis- tributors and exporters during the initial phase of consolidation. Nancy Walker has been appointed head winemaker of the Can- opy portfolio as part of VWE. Miller named new winemaker at Twomey Erin Miller is the new winemaker at Twomey Cellars, based in Calistoga and Healdsburg. Prior to joining Twomey, Miller was the assis- tant winemaker at Evening Land Vine- yards, which makes wine in Sonoma County, Oregon and the Burgundy region of France. Terravant to deploy wine ambassadors Terravant Wine Co. in Buellton is set to de- ploy "brand ambassadors" to promote the company's portfolio of private-label wine brands. The four new ambassadors will run tastings in retail locations. Based in Califor- nia's Central Coast, Terravant is a dedicated private-label company that creates wine brands for grocery stores, bars restaurants and corporate clients. Details: terravant.com. Hanzell names new president Jason Jardine is the new president of Hanzell Vineyards in Sonoma. Before joining Hanzell, Jardine had been the president of Clos Du Val winery in Napa Valley. Jardine will succeed current pres- ident Jean Arnold Sessions, who will continue to offer winemaking consult- ing through the Jean Arnold Group and has plans to launch a new project this fall with the Jean Arnold Group Foundation. Piotter joins Gallo's premium team Aaron Piotter is the newest addition to E. & J. Gallo Winery's premium winemaking team in Modesto. Piotter previously worked in winemaking for more than a decade at Fer- rari-Carano Winery.
