Wine Institute Launches Book Down to Earth highlights sustainable grapegrowing S an Francisco, Calif.—California's Wine Institute invited industry members who collaborated on its first book, "Down to Earth," to a launch party in the tome's honor April 1 at Coqueta restaurant in San Francisco. The book outlines sustainable practices used by California grapegrowers. The book's author Janet Fletcher and pho- tographer George Rose were among the hon- orees, as were representatives from several of the wineries and vineyards in the book. "It's a guide to the responsible practices that influence California grapegrowers throughout the year," Bobby Koch, presi- dent of Wine Institute, said of the book. Nancy Light said the density of informa- tion contained in "Down to Earth" made it imperative that the subject material be as engaging as possible. She cited a program at Navarro Vineyards as an example. At the winery's vineyards near Philo, Calif., sheep are employed to mow the vine rows—until the grapes become too appealing, that is. Then the owners introduce babydoll sheep that aren't tall enough to reach the clusters. Cheryl Durzy of Clos LaChance (read more about the winery's packaging redesign on page 42) said that as part of a family- owned winery, sustainability is of utmost importance. "We want to continue to make things better for each generation," she said. "It's all encompassing."
