M E T R I C S January sales of domestic wine started the year on the same 7% value growth trajectory that prevailed through most of 2013. DtC shipments grew 13% by value in January 2014 vs. January 2013, the highest growth rate for that month in at least three years. Volume climbed 14% to 189,277 cases. After a fast-growing year in 2013, winery job activity increased 26% in January, according to Winejobs.com. Total sales still grew by 8% during that period. Wines shipped by Sonoma wineries dropped the most, $2.13 per bottle to $33.05, due to a limited number of high-volume direct-to-consum- er offerings that are not reflective of most Sonoma County producers. Napa, the region with the most sales, saw an 82-cent decline to $56.04. Oregon DtC shipments increased in value by 60 cents per bottle. Winery Hiring Up 26%; DtC Shipments Grow 13% Strong winery hiring activity and growth in direct-to-consumer shipments high- lighted the Wine Industry Metrics for January. Off-premise sales continued on a steady 7% incline. The Winery Job Index jumped by 26% in January, nearly keeping up with its 28% 12-month aver- age.
