CALIFO R N I A Appellation Ventures acquires Esser Vineyards Appellation Ventures announced that it acquired Esser Vineyards winery in St. Helena. According to a statement by Appellation Ventures, Esser founder Manfred Esser and the Esser family will serve as "ambassadors" for the brand as Appellation Ventures "infuses capital and resources" to support the winery and its planned growth. Cal Poly wine program now a department California Polytechnic State University's College of Food, Agriculture & Envi- ronmental Sciences (CAFES) announced that its Wine & Viticulture Program has become an official department within the college. The department currently has 250 students and is enrolling 90 new students this year, the largest class in the program's 14-year history. Details: wvit.calpoly.edu. Ruel promoted to president Jon Ruel was promoted to president of Trefethen Family Vineyards in Napa Valley. Ruel started at TreJon fethen in 2004 as a vi- Ruel ticulturist, and in 2008 he assumed the role of vice president of operations and director of viticulture and winemaking. Details: trefethen.com. Winegrower, inventor, San Joaquin Valley farmer, Monterey County vineyard developer and lifelong entrepreneur Jerry McFarland passed away Sept. 2. McFarland planted nearly 11,000 acres of coolclimate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and co-founded two wineries, Monterey Vineyard Winery and Smith & Hook Winery, in the Santa Lucia Highlands. J. Lohr promotes winemaker Karl Antink has been promoted to the position of white wines winemaker for J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines in San Jose. Antink joined the winery in 2006 as assistant winemaker. Details: jlohr.com. Karl Antink Renwood names director of winemaking Joe Shebl is the new director of winemaking and general manager of Renwood Winery in Plymouth, Calif.
