AUGUST NEWS Wines served at presidential summit N O RTH WEST Moone-Tsai Winery's 2008 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was served during the two-day summit in June between President Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Sunnylands estate in Rancho Sapporo Mirage. Other wines served at the summit included Iron Horse Vineyards sparkling wine and Ridge Geyserville Sonoma County Zinfandel. C EN TRAL Precept purchases Yakima Valley vineyard Precept Wine purchased the 174-acre "Skyfall" vineyard in Washington's Yakima Valley. The company plans to plant more than 100 vineyard acres. Winery group awards scholarships Wilson Artisan Wineries awarded $25,000 Tokyo in Nagoya scholarships to 23 children of Sonoma Osaka County vineyard workers. Ken and Diane Hiroshima Wilson founded the scholarship program in 2001. Details: sonomafb.org. apan Father, son team up at Andrew Will Winery reopens after fire Chris Camarda, owner and winemaker of Andrew Will Winery in Vashon, Wash., announced that his son Will Camarda would join the winery as assistant winemaker. Details: andrewwill.com. Less than a year after a devastating June 23, 2012, fire, Miletta Vista Winery in St. Paul, Neb., reopened for business. Owners Mick and Loretta McDowell began rebuilding the winery soon after the fire and were able to reopen their tasting room June 14. Details: milettavistawinery.com. Winemaker at Howell Mountain Vineyards Bryan Kane Bryan Kane is the new winemaker at Howell Mountain Vineyards in Napa Valley. Kane already helps make wine at other Howell Mountain wineries and is currently the winemaker for The Winery SF. Washington Wine Foundation earns grant The Washington Wine Foundation received a $174,000 grant to develop safety training materials for small to mid-sized wineries. Materials will be available by July 2014. Wisconsin winery opens restored cave Wollersheim Winery in Prairie Du Sac, Wis., opened a cave that the owners claim was dug out by the "father of California Hogue named to Hall of Fame viticulture," Agoston Haraszthy, in the Mike Hogue, who co-founded Hogue 1840s.
