JULY NEWS Murdoch buys winery property Sapporo Osaka shima n Dry and sweet rosé were among the categories at the inaugural First Blush wine contest. Rupert Murdoch, founder and CEO of the media giant News Corp., purchased Moraga Vineyards winery in the Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles. The property includes a 14-acre vineyard, estate home, winery and cave. Former owner Tom Jones built the winery in 2005. Details: moragavineyards.com. Winners in rosé contest Jelly Jar Wines in Rutherford received "best wine" honors and a double-gold medal for its Lake County-sourced dry rosé in the inaugural First Blush contest. Tokyo Organizers said the contest was CaliforNagoya nia's first competition exclusively for rosé wines. In the sweet wine category, top honors went to Ménage à Trois rosé by Trinchero Family Estates. Paso Robles was the most honored appellation with 10 medals including two golds. Changes at Rideau Vineyard Iris Rideau, owner of Rideau Vineyard in Solvang, announced she had hired consulting winemaker Paul Wilkins to assist the winery's new winemaker Amanda Baird, who comes to Rideau from Halter Ranch Winery in Paso Robles. Rideau also named Marlen Porter the winery's new general manager. Details: rideauvineyard.com. Brakesman joins Bin to Bottle Gretchen Brakesman joined Bin to Bottle winery in Napa in the new position of executive director. Most recently, Brakesman was the director of sales and marketing at The Ranch Winery, also in Napa Valley. Details: bintobottle.com. Evans joins Napa Grapegrowers N O RTH WEST Adelsheim hires tasting room manager Jillian Glazer is the new tasting room and hospitality manager for Adelsheim Vineyard in Newberg, Ore. Glazer is the former assistant manager of the Ponzi Wine Bar in Dundee, Ore. Details: adelsheim.com. Winery earns historic marker HillCrest Vineyard in Roseburg, Ore., announced it will receive a historic marker from the state agency Oregon Travel Experience. The marker will be placed at the winery in spring 2014 to commemorate the first planting of Pinot Noir in Oregon in 1961.
