WineEast Grapegrowing Northern Grapes Project Sees Results Grant enables scientists to work together on projects benefiting cold-climate regions By Linda Jones McKee W ith the growth of the cold-climate grape and wine industry since the 1990s, it became apparent that the new cold-hardy varieties had unique characteristics that called for different growing, production and winemaking practices, and that the wines made from them would require marketing and promotion to increase sales. A planning grant from the Specialty Crops Research Initiative allowed a group of regional grower organizations and university researchers to hold workshops in Vermont and Minnesota to learn about the cold-climate industry's needs and how they could be addressed. With support from 19 producer groups from Nebraska to New Hampshire, and under the leadership of Tim Martinson Tim of Cornell University, a group of 12 Martinson universities applied for a five-year Coordinated Agriculture Project (CAP) grant. In 2011 the grant was awarded to the project (called Northern Grapes: Integrating viticulture, winemaking and marketing of new cold-hardy cultivars supporting new and growing rural wineries) to cover three broad areas: crop production, processing (winemaking) and consumers/markets. Wine East HIGHLIGHTS • The Northern Grapes Project is addressing crop production and processing issues for cold-hardy grapes. • Developing markets for wines made from cold-hardy grapes is an important aspect of the project. • The cold-climate grape and wine industry has had an economic impact of more than $342 million across 12 states in the upper Midwest and New England. • Sulfur and copper are being evaluated for disease control with the new northern grape varieties.
