JANUARY NEWS C ENT R A L Sapporo Tokyo Nagoya Osaka Hiroshima University Japan plant physiology specialist dies A University of Missouri assistant professor, Anthony Peccoux, died Nov. 17 in a one-car accident south of Columbia, Mo. A graduate of the University of Bordeaux, France, with a Ph.D. in plant physiology, Peccoux specialized in the study of grapevine roots and their ability to withstand harsh conditions. He joined the faculty of Anthony Peccoux the Division of Plant Sciences within Missouri���s College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources in March 2012 to help improve the Missouri wine industry through grapevine research and outreach. USDA notes growth of Michigan wine A recent report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture���s National Agricultural Statistics Service found that during the past decade the total number of winegrape acres in Michigan doubled from 1,300 to 2,650. Riesling is the No. 1 cultivar planted in the state. In 2002, Michigan had 204 acres of the grape, and that figure grew to nearly 600 acres by 2011. Pinot Noir is the state���s second most popular grape with 235 acres. Michigan is home to 130 wineries, according to WinesVinesDATA. Details: michiganwines.com. Cooper���s Hawk chain looks to expand Cooper���s Hawk Winery & Restaurants, a chain of eateries and tasting rooms served by a winery based in Countryside, Ill., announced a plan to open eight to 10 new locations through 2014. Founded in 2005, Cooper���s Hawk currently has 12 restaurants and a wine club, which features wines produced with fruit shipped to Illinois from the western United States. Cooper���s Hawk produced 175,000 cases of wine in 2011, according to a statement released by the company. Details: chwinery.com. EAST DrinkLocalWine meeting in Maryland The group Drink�� LocalWine, which promotes wine regions outside of California, Oregon and Washington, will hold its annual conference in Baltimore, Md., to showcase Maryland���s growing wine industry.
